Smith Engineering is committed to fostering an inclusive environment where all students, particularly those from the Black community, can thrive. We acknowledge the unique barriers faced by Black and other racialized students and are dedicated to challenging discriminatory norms that may impede their success. Our faculty strives to create a supportive atmosphere in which every student feels welcomed, valued, and empowered to reach their full potential.

In response to feedback from Black students, we have established the ‘Black Students in Smith Engineering Group Room’—a dedicated space where they can study, connect, and socialize with peers who share similar experiences. This space provides an opportunity to build relationships, strengthen a sense of community, and offer mutual support. To further enhance their academic journey and prepare them for life after graduation, we host monthly socials and bi-monthly seminars. These events not only provide a forum for students to voice their concerns but also offer professional development and networking opportunities, equipping Black students with the tools and connections necessary for success in both their academic and professional lives.
